Originally know as St John’s Gospel Choir, the choir was intended to be a ‘one-off’ project as part of the Arts & Flower Festival at St John the Evangelist RC Church, Horsham, in the summer of 2009.
Under the direction of Kaytie Harding (Creative Director of Voice From The Coal Shed), we enjoyed ourselves so much that we didn’t want to stop singing and have made several performances, including ‘The Messiah Experience’ at St John’s Church Broadbridge Heath (2009), Horsham Interfaith Forum concert (2010), the Horsham Churches Together Good Friday Service (2011) and at the 2011 Arts & Flower Festival at St John The Evangelist Church.
Although Gospel singing is seated in the Christian tradition, GospelChoir very much welcomes members from all faiths and none – the only prerequisite is a desire to sing (especially welcome are those who think they can’t!).
GospelChoir are a small but dedicated bunch of people who just love Gospel music. Some of them are believers and some are not – it doesn’t matter. It is an all encompassing group who are brought together by music! We meet in Barns green if we have a project to work towards for about six weeks at a time but quite often we get withdrawal symptoms so all start back up again! Last year we sang for Age Concern and travelled to Chalk Farm Salvation Army to lead a Gospel singing workshop there. We are looking forward to returning there in November and will be taking part in the Hymnathon at Lancing Cathedral in aid of Sussex Hospices in September. Our concerts are always thought provoking and full of joy and we approach a challenge with much laughter and mutual support. It is a joy to be in this choir. If you’d like a share of the joy please join us. There is no audition, we don’t read music and no experience is necessary.
What the Choir said in 2012:
“GospelChoir is very excited to be performing at the Dorking Halls in the Choiroke event with other choirs from across Surrey and Sussex”.
