North Surrey Barbershop Harmony Club, The Downsmen
The North Surrey Barbershop Harmony Club, which performs as ‘The Downsmen’, was initially formed in 1975 in Carshalton, though now we meet in Leatherhead on a Wednesday evening. Directed by Lisa Robathan, we perform in the a cappella style of 4 part harmony, known as Barbershop, which is generally considered to have started in America amongst customers waiting for a shave and haircut in barbershops. Our repertoire is expansive, with music ranging from songs written in the early 1900’s, songs from West End shows, to more modern adaptations of Disney themes. We sing at concerts, like this one, competitions, as well as informal get-togethers, often for charities.
Further details of the Club are available on their website.
The Downsmen took part in Choiroke 2015 and are performing again this year.
2015 – “The Downsmen are looking forward to their first Choiroke experience and are thrilled to be involved in an event that is raising money for such a fantastic charity. We’ve enjoyed making new singing friends from the other choirs and hope that we can make the audience laugh and cry (for the right reasons!) with our Barbershop sound”
2016 – “We are delighted to be performing for the 2nd time in Choiroke at Dorking Halls”
